FOP Legal Defense

Today’s law enforcement officers face increasing legal exposure both on and off duty. A single complaint, use-of-force incident, disciplinary action, civil lawsuit, or criminal allegation can place an officer’s career, finances, reputation, and freedom at risk. The Fraternal Order of Police Legal Defense Plan was created to help protect members when they need legal support most.

The FOP Legal Defense Plan is sponsored by the National Fraternal Order of Police and operated by FOP Legal Plan, Inc. It is designed to help pay covered legal defense costs for eligible participants, subject to the terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions of the plan. The plan provides coverage options for administrative, civil, and criminal matters involving covered law enforcement-related claims.

Legal defense is not just a benefit — it is a critical professional resource. Officers are often required to make fast, high-risk decisions in complex situations. Even when an officer acts appropriately, the legal process can be costly, stressful, and career-impacting. Having access to legal defense helps ensure members are not facing those challenges alone.

Depending on the coverage selected and eligibility requirements, the plan may assist with matters such as job-related discipline, civil lawsuits tied to official duties, and criminal investigations or charges arising from covered law enforcement employment activity. The plan also allows participants to use a Plan Attorney, and materials note that legal fees may be fully paid when using a Plan Attorney for covered claims.

Available to Eligible FOP Members

The FOP Legal Defense Plan is available to eligible FOP members who meet the plan requirements. The full coverage plan description identifies eligible participants as active or associate FOP members in good standing who are otherwise eligible under the plan. This means FOP Legal Defense may also be an important resource for qualifying Associate Members, not only Active Members.

All participation, coverage, benefits, exclusions, and claim decisions are governed by the official FOP Legal Defense Plan documents. Members and applicants should review the current plan materials carefully and contact the plan administrator with specific questions about eligibility, enrollment, coverage, or claims.
